Sarah R Carley
US Telemark Ski Team President & Athlete

President. Athlete. Olympic Dreamer.

As the youngest and first female President of the US Telemark Ski Association (USTSA), I have also been an athlete with the US Telemark Ski Team for seven seasons. Over this time I have competed in seven National Championships, have had over fifteen FIS World Cup starts, and campaigned for Telemark racing to be an IOC sanctioned sport in the Winter Olympic Games.

My work as President focuses around the management of four teams and over thirty athletes; World Cup, National, Development, and Masters. Additionally, I work with the USTSA Board of Directors to focus on USTSA sustainability including event and race funding (sponsorships, grants, and other sources), insurance, taxes, and overall sport and organizational promotion (social media, website, and newsletter).

How I Got Here

Sarah R Carley  |  US Telemark Ski Team

Like many New England natives, I grew up skiing. Not your skiing on vacation skiing, but rather your get in the car and don’t come back until Sunday night type of skiing. Weekend warrior, which often is used as a misnomer and doesn’t adequately reflect the amount we gave up to be able to be in the mountains every weekend. I am eternally grateful to my family for instilling this behavior in me, I wouldn’t have traded even an hour on the hill for Friday night parties or Saturday football games.

Jump ahead, past years of alpine racing, snowboarding and freestyle skiing, to age 11, when, I landed on my first pair of telemark skis. I was hooked.

My first formal experience with USTSA was at the 2012 US Telemark Nationals, hosted at Gunstock Mountain. I found out last minute and insisted that we go. On my fat skis I raced against the Elite women and, well, didn’t do poorly. While I was infinitely familiar with GS gates, it was my first experience with a loom and jump. I was, once again, hooked.

Since then, I have held a team spot every year and continued to race at local, national and international telemark events. At the 2018 Annual Membership Meeting, I was voted in as USTSA President, as well as continuing my role as a National Team athlete.

About USTSA

Sarah R Carley  |  USTSA President

The US Telemark Ski Association (USTSA) is the governing body for the US Telemark Ski Team(s) and Telemark Freeskiing in the United States.

Telemark skiing is one of the few ski disciplines in the US which does not fall under the purview of the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA).  We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization managed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

The goal of USTSA is to develop the sport of telemark skiing through hosting telemark events, educating individuals and organizations on the enjoyment and benefits of telemark skiing, and organizing the US Telemark Ski Team. With regard to the US Telemark Team, there is effectively, one large goal which is to make Telemark racing an Olympic sport, through social media promotion and the hosting of local, national, and international competitions. Through international cooperation, the 2018 FIS Congress approved the petition to submit Telemark Skiing as an event at the Bejing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
