USTSA Newsletter, May 2018

In the past couple years we've seen a fundamental shift in how Telemark skiing is organized at its highest level, the International Ski Federation (FIS). The professionalism that surrounds the sport has completely changed and that has, for anyone who has not yet heard, culminated in FIS voting to have two Telemark events be considered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for inclusion at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Both the Parallel Sprint and the Team Parallel Sprint are being considered after FIS Telemark Committee and Athlete presentations at the biennial FIS Congress, held in Greece just last week. Over the past couple years the international Telemark community has driven increased viewership and participation in these events including more World Cup races than previous seasons and a new livestreaming and social media presence.

The efforts paid off, with FIS saying 'yes' to both events.

So What's Next?

Up next for FIS and the FIS Telemark Committee is the IOC Vote in June of this year. The Telemark community is looking for everyone who is passionate about the sport to keep up the momentum and continue to raise awareness through their curated social media platforms, most formidably the use of the hashtag #MakeTelemarkOlympic. No matter which way the IOC votes, this is the beginning of a much larger journey, with Telemark racing launching into the spotlight across the world. Outside of the Olympic scope the end goal of the entire international Telemark community is to draw out more elite participants and passionate supporters. As an organization, USTSA will continue to push for both through our hosting of local, National and World Cup events.

A little closer to home - next up for us is building a solid platform to launch into our 2018-2019 season. Team nominations have been sent out, and we are eagerly waiting to announce the final list to all of you, stay tuned for the announcement soon! We are coming out of an incredible exciting 2018 US Telemark Nationals, with Farli Boden and Cory Snyder being crowned this year's National Champions. Following in the wake of two World Cup events hosted here in the East, US Nationals at Crotchet Mountain saw the return of many viewers and citizen participants.

As for our athletes, they are already hard at work to prepare for next season; meeting with new and old product sponsors to test equipment for the season, working in the gym (and the office), and inevitably dreaming about a positive IOC vote.

Keep in touch!

Our athletes maintain entertaining social media accounts documenting their training and lives, showcasing their passion for the outdoors and Telemark skiing. Some will have the pleasure of skiing in Japan or Chile over the summer, others still will be hitting the mountains on their bikes, or creating new workout routines in the gym. It's worth taking a look. Start out at out USTSA Instagram account and branch out from there!
